Program Description: Continuing its sixty-year commitment
to public service, the University established the Institute for Governmental
Service and Research (IGSR) in October 2006 through the consolidation
of two organizations - the Institute for Governmental Service (IGS)
and the Bureau of Governmental Research (BGR). The Institute is dedicated
to improving the well-being of individuals and communities through
applied research, education, training, and technology innovations.
IGSR partners with local governments, state and federal agencies, university
researchers, and community organizations to undertake research and
technical assistance projects in areas such as: public safety, public
health, justice administration, organizational effectiveness, leadership
and governance, fiscal management, and land use and growth management.
The Institute also provides strategic planning consultation and facilitation
as part of its service portfolio and operates the Academy for Excellence
in Local Governance certificate program for Maryland’s municipal
and county officials.
