Program Description: West Virginia's state government authorized the creation of the Institute for Public Affairs at West Virginia University in 1986. The Institute began operations in 1989 and has since engaged in a number of activities designed to fulfill its directive to serve as an unbiased source of information and as a vehicle for bridging the information and communication gap that all too often exists between West Virginia's governmental policymakers and the state's academic community. The Institute conducts independent research and proposes strategies and options on public issues and policies upon its own initiative or as may be requested by the executive or the legislature. The institute publishes the West Virginia Public Affairs Reporter, a technical reports and monographs series of interest to West Virginia's state and local government officials. It also sponsors an education and training series for the state legislature and county government officials, an internship program for WVU students, and an on-campus speakers series.
